author
Abstract:
Substances existed in tobacco smoke including carcinogens, alkaloids (mainly nicotine), irritants of the respiratory tract and carbon monoxide are known responsible for a wide range of diseases and disorders. The current study was designed to investigate the hematologic effects of smoking. This study is an observational, cross-sectional investigation in which the peripheral blood erythrocytic and leukocytic status as well as platelet count were studied in 51 healthy male cigarette-smoker (mean age: 31±5 yrs.) and in 35 male non-smoker (mean age: 28±2 yrs.) volunteers. Non of the volunteers in both groups had a history of medication 3 months prior to blood sampling. Smokers had at least a 5-year history of smoking and smoked 10-20 cigarettes per day. The number of peripheral blood leukocytes (WBC), erythrocytes (RBC) and thrombocytes (Plts) were counted in smoker and non-smoker groups. Also, hemoglobin (Hgb), hematocrit (Hct) and red blood cell indices (MCV, MCH and MCHC) were determined. Statistical analyses were carried out using the unpaired student t test. In the smoker group, the amounts of WBC, RBC and Hgb were significantly higher compared to those of the non-smoker group (p

Effects of cigarette smoking on morphological features of platelets in healthy men
OBJECTIVES To assess the effects of cigarette smoking on thrombocytopoiesis and some platelet morphological parameters in healthy male smokers. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 542 consecutive healthy men (aged 20 to 88 years), referred to the laboratory of Fatemieh Hospital, Semnan, Iran, between November 2011 and November 2012 for checking up were enrolled. The subjects were divided i...

OBJECTIVE Cigarette smoking carries higher risks for most of the chronic diseases. It also has chronic and acute effects on the hematologic system. This study explores the effects of cigarette smoking on some blood values of the healthy young male smokers. Background: Smoking is one of the preventable causes of disease in middle and low-income countries. This study was conducted in smokers and non-smokers to observe the changes in total count of leukocytes in cigarette smokers in relation to body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure (BP). Methods:The study populations were from different sources including diagnostic center and general hospital, an...

flow in natural river bends is a complex and turbulent phenomenon which affects the scour and sedimentations and causes an irregular bed topography on the bed. for the reason, the flow hydralics and the parameters which affect the flow to be studied and understand. in this study the effect of bed and wall roughness using the software fluent discussed in a sharp 90-degree flume bend with 40.3cm ...
Cerebral blood flow and cessation of cigarette smoking in healthy volunteers.
OBJECTIVE The mechanisms by which cessation of cigarette smoking may improve regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) and the details of the possible relationship remain unclear. Xenon-133 inhalation was used to determine rCBF in six smokers at baseline (during smoking) and again 6 and 9 years after they had quit smoking (quitter group). A control group of eight nonsmokers (nonsmokers group) underwe...
